Acrylic painting - 13x18"
Green-winged Teal..............time? 20 hours?

Here was my entry for the 2011 Colorado duck stamp contest. I placed 6th overall which was a slight dissapointment to me. I thought it came out very well, just not what they were looking for I guess. :)

Hope you enjoy it! I put in a lot of hard work into it, and in the end it came down to me having to rush it so I could make the deadline. Probably my most favorite that I have done so far, and I just started my federal duck stamp contest today so LOOK OUT competitors!!! :)

My life. This is honestly one of the best duck paintings I've seen, even more impressive is the fact that it is done traditionally. A lot of people could create something very realistic on the computer, given enough time, but pulling something this lifelike off with traditional (acrylic?) paint requires a hell a lot of experience and serious skill.

Only one little critique if I may: someone else also told it, though I personally would have left the trees out. Currently, they only distract the viewer because they are abstract and brightly coloured. Besides, it also raises slight questions with me: trees growing in between the reeds?

Other than that, beyond awesomeness to say the least! C:

This is waaaaay better then the winning entry in my opinion (which the CWHF has STILL not sent me my stamp and its been over a month!). Yours looks look far more natural then three ducks all in a row. Very nice job, and congratulations on 6th place, thats not a bad achievment.

At first I thought it was a photo so I took a closer look and thought again it must be a photo, but those lines and detail are so carefully done. You must really love painting because this shows it!

Exquisite detail in the birds and water, as usual! Your abilities with reflected light are beautiful and quite inspiring.

For a small critique, I would like to see more detail in the background trees. They stand out to me more than I would like, for me personally, because they seem a little whimsical compared to the rest of the painting.

yup I know ... The biggest concern I have when creating these stamp entries is how to make it simple enough without sacrificing what I want to include. So I guess what I tried to do was go easy on small detail like that without having to say not put any trees in. So I dunno, I tried to create something stamp friendly, and I am not sure if I over did it. Thanks!!!

This is quite true, the need to sacrifice details to make it translate well in stamp size. I didn't really think about that when I viewed it before - even though I knew it was for the Duck Stamp competition. As far as "stamp friendly" I for one think you got most of it very well. Duck poses, setting, lighting, detail, recognizability. I've never been quite sure what the judges look for in their final stamp choices, but I would guess that near the end of the judging their judging becomes very nit-picky.
