Well I have been experimenting with colored pencils lately. This was really the first attempt at completing a drawing entirely out of colored pencils. I feel I really learned a lot about how to use this medium. Perhaps I'll try another and see if I can improve.

I will always say that the hair of a deer is the hardest thing to get right. I struggled with the body! :)

Thanks!

Okay, honestly, considering how a deer struggles to survive through hunting season, you could say the struggle with getting the body just right is symbolic of the way a deer survives. ;) Great work, as usual!

I'm curious of which color pencils you used for this project. The lay down of them looks like Prismacolor or Faber-Castell brands but I'm curious since there's a wonderful blending that I'm familiar with from Prismas.

Otherwise, exceptionally beautiful creature and you've done rather well with it. Startling to see such a dark undercoat on the deer though. Areas for shadows seem more black than I'd have expected. Burnt umber has a good deep coloring while remaining warm. Otherwise, very beautiful picture!

Good color palette and I like the composition. Excellent piece indeed for a first try with colored pencils!

Great work but i'd suggest you to try a more homogeneous treatment of the background (for example all horizontal strokes) cause here you changed the direction in the area surrounding the antlers and the difference it's clearly visible there.
That's my opinion thought it's a great work overall.

Thanks! Yes that was the part of learning how to use colored pencils haha.. I started one way, decided that looked bad, then finished the other way

Well, you already realized so there's nothing else to be critical about it.
Congratulations for the level of detail (which sometimes can be annoying with other media but it's perfect for pencils) and how soon you reached that considering you're still getting started with this medium.

A little less combing and more feathering. the matrix is there along with the shadowing, more blending. As he sniffs the air, he's saying, DAMN SHE STINKS GOOD!!
