Spruce grouse
Acrylic painting - 13x18"

This was my entry for the 2011 Oregon upland stamp contest. I have made it into the final round of judging, but haven't heard the results yet. Contest is still later today I guess. :)

I painted the subspecies found in Canada which is not the same one found in Oregon which I didn't know. So apparently I painted the wrong species of spruce grouse. The tips of the tail are suppost to be white, not brown. Stupid I know, but it might hurt my chance of winning.

Anyways, either way I am proud of it and I think I am starting to show more improvement in my painting so that's all that counts. Thanks a lot for looking and comments welcome!

Charles

Wow! I remember seeing this painting on their website, thinking ”What an incredible piece, how could this not win?”
It’s even more stunning now that I can see all the detail you put into it.
You should be really proud. :)

This is a good job, and you obviously put lots of effort on it so i'm doubtful about pointing what i think it's a "flaw" in a certain sense. I hope this critique is read keeping in mind that i like the painting as a whole and that it's inspired by a honest intention to be of help:
Detail is good but sometimes less detail in certain areas make a better effect in the end, i know some people do that on purpose, but i guess you aim to achieve a "realistic" impression of nature, it may be a subjective concept i know, but in the field of "wildlife" and "nature" genres i guess it would be better if the painting suggest the way a human eye would see things at first sight, kind of lurking at the animals.
In short words, sorry for the long introduction, i think it would be "better" if the branches were not all drawn with the same level of detail, the ones in the background should be less clear, maybe some of them even blurry ... i can see the female bird was worked less detailed that the male in the foreground, i can figure out there's some space between them both because she looks smaller (assuming that's just because she's relatively far behind, i don't know about these birds so i just assume they're about the same height). Following this reasoning the branches which are closer to the feet of the bird should be as dark and detailed as the feathers above them and so on ...
But this is just an idea of mine and other than that i'm pretty fond of this image. Of course i wish you the best luck in this contests.

Improvement indeed! This is absolutely wonderful, the smooth gradient of the sky in the background is just flawless, and the grouses are so beautifully rendered I don't think anyone would notice the slight mistake ;)

I love the transparent snowflakes in the foreground, I'm working on a winter wildlife piece at the moment and this is truly inspiring!

Best of luck to you! :D This is a great success regardless of the outcome!
